MI v KXIP – Just Cricket’s Commentary

Match Recap

KL Rahul won the toss and elected to field first.

Sheldon Cottrell started of very well for Punjab by dismissing Quinton De Kock in the first over. Rohit Sharma was able to time the ball beautifully and was finding gaps with ease. Suryakumar Yadav looked good as well but was run out. Ishan Kishan who was brilliant in the previous match struggled to find his timing and never really got away. He fell for 28 from 32 balls and Pollard was sent in at 4. The Mumbai Indians accelerated very well in the end with Rohit, Pollard and Pandya finding boundaries at will as they scored 89 runs in the last 5 overs which took them to a massive first innings total of 191.

Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul once again looked early on but Bumrah broke the inform opening partnership. Once Agarwal fell, Punjab could not get any momentum going as Karun Nair and KL Rahul also fell soon after that. Pooran struck some big shots but Maxwell and the other batsman struggled as Mumbai bowled very well and won by 48 runs.

Game Changing Moments

The last 5 overs of the Mumbai Indians batting innings really changed the game. Punjab had the innings under control as Mumbai were only at 102 in 15 overs. But they conceded 89 runs in the last 5 overs which got Mumbai 20 – 25 runs more than what they should have.

K Gawtham bowling the 20th over was never going to be a great idea against Pollard and Pandya as they got 25 runs of that over.

Areas to Focus

Kings XI Punjab have to seriously take a look at their bowling line up. At the moment they are going in with Neesham as the 5th bowler which is going to put them in trouble at the death overs on most days, considering Cottrell and Shami are not at their best in the last 5 overs. They might want to bring in someone like Mujeeb Ur Rahman or Jordan into the team.

Although Punjab have a power packed batting line up, at the moment they look heavily dependent on KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal to win them games. Likes of Maxwell and Pooran have to take more responsibility.

Underrated Performer of the Day

Although Bumrah and Chahar were brilliant, Krunal Pandya came into the attack when Punjab got off to a flyer as they got 33 from first 3 overs and bowled a very good 4th over giving just 4 runs, slowing down the innings. He bowled 2 overs in the power play for just 7 runs and picked up a wicket as well.
